The role of dispersant in water-based industrial paint

Dispersant is a very important auxiliary in paint, the role of water-based industrial paint is indispensable. It is different from the film-forming additives, pH adjusting agent will be volatile in the drying process; also different from the wetting agent, defoamer, thickening agent additive amount is low. It is because it always exists in the paint film and the content is high, so the performance of the paint film has a great impact. Therefore, selecting and using the right dispersant is of great help to the performance of the paint.

Dispersant Characteristics:

1. Shorten the time and energy of dispersing process
Through the affinity effect, the surface of pigment particles can be converted from ‘gas-solid interface’ to ‘liquid-solid interface’ more quickly. This reduces the time and energy required for grinding.

2. Prevent flocculation and coarsening
The dispersant acts on the surface of the pigment, avoiding mutual attraction through electrostatic repulsion or spatial resistance, thus increasing the stability of the system.

It is worth mentioning that the finer the pigment particles are, the larger the specific surface area is, the higher the surface energy is, the higher the adsorption strength of the dispersant is needed, so the dosage of the dispersant is also related to the quality of the colouring paste.

3. Prevent the floating colour from blooming
Similar to the above principle, it is the essence of the stabilising ability of dispersant.

4. Improvement of colour performance
Improve the colouring power and increase the colour spreading. Enhance the saturation and transparency of organic pigment, and increase the covering power of inorganic pigment.

5. Influence on paint film performance
The dispersant will not leave the paint film after the paint film is formed, but as a part of the paint film permanently exists in the paint film, its influence on the performance of the paint film is not insignificant.
